Community Programmer and Music Department Librarian


Job Title:  CKXU Community Engagement Programmer and Music Department Librarian

The CKXU Community Programmer and Music Department Librarian will focus on producing and hosting a two hour interactive morning show with a focus on community engagement, highlighting festivals, initiatives, projects and current events in the greater Lethbridge area. The morning program includes interviews and guest hosts from local organizations along with custom curated playlists to complement the focus of that day’s show. When not in studio or prepping the following days show, the Community Programmer position will fill the rest of their work hours assisting in the CKXU Music Department acting as the Librarian by adding to, editing and updating the digital library metadata, writing reviews to albums as needed and assisting in the conversion of CD cases to CD sleeves to assist CKXU with gaining more physical space in the music library.

Tasks & Responsibilities:

Morning Radio Program  

  • Produce a two-hour morning radio program twice per week, with a focus on community engagement, highlights from music festivals, community initiatives, projects, and current events in the greater Lethbridge area.

  • Requires interviews and guest hosts from local organizations

  • Producing and logging custom-curated music playlists

Music Department Librarian

  • Assisting in the CKXU Music Department with the development of CKXU’s Music Library, and Database

  • Editing and updating stored digital file metadata

  • Writing reviews for albums as needed

  • Assisting in the conversion of CD jewel cases to CD sleeves.


  • An understanding and appreciation of the role of campus/community radio in the Southern Alberta area

  • Strong communication and people skills; positive attitude, creative thinker

  • Excellent planning and organizational skills

  • Practical experience in radio programming: well developed music knowledge, experience with audio production

  • The successful candidate will already be comfortable using a broadcast booth, conducting interviews, and editing their work for broadcast

  • A general understanding of Windows and Mac computer operating systems

  • Experience with audio editing software (i.e. Audacity, Logic)

  • Experience in community radio and/or community organization will be considered an asset.

  • Post-secondary education in Communications, Broadcasting, Media, or an equivalent background gained through hands-on experience will be considered an asset

  • Must sign CKXU membership agreement


  • Quiet, shared office space located on campus in the University of Lethbridge Students’ Union Building

  • Working a unique and fun environment.

As this position is generously funded by a Canada Summer Jobs grant, the eligible applicants are required to:

  • be between the ages of 15 and 30 years of age (inclusive) at the start of employment;

  • be registered as a fulltime student during the preceding academic year;

  • return to school on a fulltime basis during the next academic year;

  • be a student in a secondary, postsecondary, vocational or technical program;

  • be a Canadian Citizen, permanent resident, or person on whom refugee protection has been conferred under the Immigration and Refugee Protection Act*

  • be legally entitled to work according to the relevant provincial / territorial legislation and regulations


  • $16.00 / hour

  • 30 hours / week

  • Eight (8) week period of the contract
